Clouds in the Sky

In many of John Constable’s paintings, including many of the ones created in and of Sussex, the sky takes up much of the composition, and even his small sketches of clouds are now highly prized and much discussed works of art.

In this talk, Dr Alexandra Loske will take a closer look at Constable’s and some of contemporaries’ skies, why he declared that he was ‘a man of clouds’ and provide the scientific and conceptual context to Romanticism’s fascination with the sky and meteorological conditions. The talk will also discuss how contemporary artists still use the fleetingness of clouds as inspiration.

Those members who have already advised Sir Philip that they will be attending this lecture are asked to complete the purchase and pay for it along with the other lectures they want to attend in the summer season, when they receive the Eastbourne Arts Circle Magazine in mid-March.

Dr Alexandra Loske is a German-born art historian and curator at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton specialising in late 18th century and early 19th century European art and architecture. Alexandra has lectured and published widely.
