Yehudi Menuhin, one of the great violinists of the twentieth century, was passionate about education right up to the very end of his life. Though he hardly went to school himself Menuhin realised the value of great teaching and of careful study. In the late 1940’s he discovered that Russia was far ahead of the West in teaching musical instruments and set about doing something to change this. Nicolas Chisholm was Headmaster of the Yehudi Menuhin School for 22 years and worked closely with Yehudi Menuhin. He is uniquely positioned to describe how the School was founded and how a specialist music school works. This lecture is a sequel to Creating Utopias – the life and work of Yehudi Menuhin.
Before his retirement Nicolas Chisholm was Headmaster of the Yehudi Menuhin School for 22 years and worked closely with Yehudi Menuhin for the first 11 of them. In 2011 Nicolas was awarded the MBE for services to music education.
